Tips for staying safe in the kitchen
Burns, slips, and injuries are common in the kitchen, especially for older people. Follow these tips to stay safe:
- Wear the right clothes: Avoid baggy clothes that can catch fire.
- Wear sensible shoes: Choose sturdy shoes with good grip and avoid open-toed shoes.
- Stir safely: Stir away from your body to prevent burns and splashes.
- Keep it clean: Clean up spills quickly to avoid slips and prevent bacteria.
- Use oven gloves: Always use oven gloves when handling hot items.
- Have a first aid kit: Keep bandages and plasters handy for any wounds.
- Handle pots safely: Make sure pot handles don't stick out over the edge to avoid knocking them off.
- Ventilate: Ensure your ventilation system works well, and open a window if needed.
- Remove fire hazards: Keep flammable liquids away, unplug small appliances when not in use, and keep toasters and kettles away from curtains and tea towels.
- Use sharp knives: Sharp knives are safer because they require less pressure and are less likely to slip.
